There have been over 140 species, subspecies, varieties, forms, and cultivars published in this genus and it is likely that most are invalid. Variations of A. myriostigma which are devoid of white flecks occur in the wild. Over the years, nurseries have selected for this characteristic, the result being that these should probably be labeled A. myriostigma 'nudum'. In addition, most of these are what some would label Astrophytum myriostigma var. quadricostatum 'nudum', but some will likely develop a fifth rib with additional growth.
