Ceiba pentandra (L) Gaertn.
The "Kapok Tree" or "Silk Cotton Tree", the tallest tree in the Amazon rain forest. The name comes from the Taino word for the tree pronounced tsayee-baa.The national tree of Puerto Rico, it's also a sacred symbol in Mayan mythology. The fibers in the seed pod is the kapok traditionally used in mattress stuffing, etc., now largely replaced by artificial fibers. The swollen and spiney trunk works well as a bonsai.
